The Berau regency in East Kalimantan has developed a model of ecosystem development in Kampung Merabu in Kelay that integrates economic growth and protection of through ecotourism. Attractions include the karst mountain range of Sangkulirang Mangkalihat. The Berau policy is very interesting, in contrast for instance to Pati regency in Central Java, where the local government has allowed the mountainous region Kendeng to become a mining site for basic materials for a cement factory, thereby inciting ongoing conflicts with local communities.

The new edition includes indicators to help measure the 169 targets of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - these build on the 8 goals and 18 targets of the Millennium Development Goals we focused on in previous editions, but are far wider in scope and far more ambitious.
On the margins of an international gathering of biodiversity experts, a new initiative has been launched with support from the GEF to help prevent the extinction of rare birds and other endangered species. As part of the Alliance for Zero Extinction (AZE), BirdLife International, American Bird Conservancy (ABC), IUCN, UNEP, GEF, and the Governments of Brazil, Chile, and Madagascar have teamed up in a new effort to both halt global extinctions and safeguard the habitats in which they live.

This paper describes an interactive web-based near real-time (NRT) forest monitoring system using four levels of geographic information services: 1) the acquisition of continuous data streams from satellite and community-based monitoring using mobile devices, 2) NRT forest disturbance detection based on satellite time-series, 3) presentation of forest disturbance data through a web-based application and social media and 4) interaction of the satellite based disturbance alerts with the end-user communities to enhance the collection of ground data.
