Practical Action currently has a team of people working in the Chosica district of Lima, after at least seven people were killed by flooding and landslides. The team has been working in the affected area for the last few months, initiating a project designed to make those living on the banks of the Rio Rimac more resilient to flooding and better prepared to cope when a disaster strikes.
Central American economies are experiencing an ongoing boom in tourism, and in certain regions this often comes with real estate speculation in support of a trend toward all-inclusive resorts, large hotels and vacation homes.
A study conducted by researchers at Penn State and partnering institutions, however, challenges the notion that this mass tourism model is better for resident well-being in biodiverse regions as compared to ecotourism, which has considerably less impact on the environment and local communities.
The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Aquatic Resources Authority of Panama have worked to integrate biodiversity conservation into fishing and tourism in Panama's archipelagos. The archipelagos are a special coastal marine management zone whose inhabitants rely on artisanal fishing, tourism and agriculture. However, the fish population and jobs have been declining in recent years, according to UNDP.

Amazonia is the most biodiverse rainforest on Earth, and the debate over how many tree species grow there remains contentious. Here we provide a checklist of all tree species collected to date, and describe spatial and temporal trends in data accumulation. We report 530,025 unique collections of trees in Amazonia, dating between 1707 and 2015, for a total of 11,676 species in 1225 genera and 140 families.
