ADB has welcomed the decision by six Asia and Pacific nations to endorse a Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) agreement that lays out a plan of action to ensure the sustainability of their shared coastal and marine resources.

The Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security Plan of Action was signed today by heads of state from the six countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste – at the inaugural CTI Leaders Summit in Manado, Indonesia.

The formulation of Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) is one of the main conditions for concessional lending by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank to developing countries. Nevertheless, while evidence indicates that the fisheries sector can contribute (often markedly at the local level) to improved livelihoods and the achievement of food security in many developing countries, the sector is often neglected in PRSPs.

A Tropical Depression which affected the Fiji Island Group since Thursday 8th January resulted in severe flooding of 3 major divisions of Fiji (Northern, Western and Central). Our current work came to a temporary stop and we mobilized to assist those in the flood affected areas.

The two areas we visited which are located in the interior of Sigatoka had roads that were still flooded and damaged by the flood. Luckily we managed to go through since we were traveling in a four-wheel drive.

Worldfocus special correspondent Benno Schmidt and producer Ara Ayer visited there recently and report that in their struggle to survive, Haitians are destroying the very elements of their environment that sustain them.
