A workshop was held at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) in Nouméa, New Caledonia, on December 14 and 15 2005, with funding from the MacArthur Foundation. The workshop was held to develop a framework for an online coral reef fisheries portal, to be a part of ReefBase. The coral reef fisheries portal will be a multidisciplinary resource for fisheries managers and stakeholders.
Members of the Patna branch of the Art of Living (AOL) organized a "satsang" to mark the World Environment Day on Saturday. They also took an oath on the occasion to make Patna green under its Mission Green Earth.
In association with Taru Mitra, a seminar was also organized to mark the day. The theme of the seminar was "Environmental Danger Caused by Felling of Trees".
On 20-21 February 2007 the 'Vision 2020' workshop was held at UNEP-WCMC to advance the discussion on methodologies and indicators that could be used to assess the human impact of Protected Areas and explore the feasibility of the ‘Vision 2020 - Long term assessment of the contribution of protected areas to conservation and development goals' project.
This film by the PanEco foundation demonstrates how indigenous people are affected by the destruction of peat swamp forests by palm oil companies. Palm oil cultivation is being driven by demand for renewable energy to mitigate climate change. The film illustrates the environmental and societal threats that local communities face, through the story of Saoni, a fisherman in the endagered swamps of Tripa in Aceh.
At the workshop, which was hosted by the Government of Australia in Cairns between 7 and 9 March, governments presented the latest results of their activities to reduce emissions from deforestation, the lessons learned and elaborated on possible ways to move this issue forward.
