Ensuring that forest dwellers have rights over their land is vital for slowing the deforestation that may be causing up to a fifth of the world's emissions of greenhouse gases, according to a report released Wednesday. The report by the Washington-based NGO Rights and Resources Initiative is aimed at encouraging next month's U.N. summit in Rio de Janeiro to tackle the politically contentious issue of land reforms.

Amid a recent show of high emotions on the issue, Malacañang on Saturday reassured mining firms and environmental advocates that the government will balance their interests in crafting its policy on mining. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte indicated Malacañang, in crafting its policy, will even take into consideration the heated, high-profile exchange at a mining forum last Friday.

The Third Ministerial Meeting of the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs Fisheries and Food Security will endorse a plan to establish a permanent secretariat for the initiative in Indonesia.
