The relationship between forests and human nutrition is not yet well understood. A better understanding of this relationship is vital at a time when the majority of new land for agriculture is being cleared from forests. We use Demographic Health Survey data on food consumption for children from 21 African countries and Global Land Cover Facility tree cover data to examine the relationship between tree cover and three key indicators of nutritional quality of children's diets: dietary diversity, fruit and vegetable consumption, and animal source food consumption.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is urging policy-makers to strengthen forest producer organizations as a way to help reduce poverty, improve livelihoods and boost economic development.

“Forest producer organizations have been largely under-resourced and under-appreciated,” Eduardo Rojas-Briales, FAO Assistant Director-General for Forestry, told the International Conference on Forest Producer Organizations, which began today in Guilin, China.

With African Development Bank (AfDB) support, Burkina Faso has received an $11.5 million grant from the Climate Investment Funds' (CIF) Forest Investment Program (FIP) to undertake the Gazetted Forests Participatory Management Project for REDD+ to create critically needed transformation of 12 of its gazetted forests.
