The eighth edition of UN Environment’s Emissions Gap report, released ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, finds that national pledges only bring a third of the reduction in emissions required by 2030 to meet climate targets, with private sector and sub-national action not increasing at a rate that would help close this worrying gap.

A new four year project, led by UNEP-WCMC, has been awarded around £5 million by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF).The project, Encouraging sustainable growth: East Africa Growth Corridors and the China to Africa Connection, will take a detailed looked at some of the proposed development corridors in East Africa and consider how they can be designed to deliver sustainable, inclusive and resilient economic growth.

Litter in the seas is a major global environmental problem. In connection with the Ocean Conference in New York, Sweden is joining the Clean Seas Campaign, a global UN Environment initiative to reduce marine litter. Sweden will also provide financial support to UN Environment’s work on the issue.

The sixth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6) Regional Assessment for Asia and the Pacific paints a comprehensive picture of the environmental factors contributing to human health and well-being at the regional level. Backed by a large body of recent, credible scientific evidence, regional-wide consultations and a robust intergovernmental process, the assessment demonstrates economic growth and improved access to basic services in the region. It also highlights the complexity of the interlinked environmental, social and economic challenges now confronting decision makers.
